Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is taught through the lens of a biblical worldview that is foundational for disciple-making. The complexity of the content adapts to meet what is developmentally appropriate and challenging throughout Grades PreK-8 focusing on instruction, learning, and assessment.

Students develop skills to problem solve, effectively use multi-modes of communication, and critically evaluate and analyze information from a biblical worldview. Students explore God’s world through science and math opportunities. Skills are taught, strengthened, and expanded at every grade level to grow them academically while intentionally studying biblical principles and learning how to apply them personally.

BJU is the curriculum that is used for History, Math, Science, and Bible. Their courses support our goal of building biblical worldview foundations throughout our curriculum. BJU curriculum encourages critical thinking skills and includes activities and lessons that support multisensory learning.

Handwriting

Teaching young students how to write by hand before moving on to keyboarding can help improve their reading fluency as well.
In Kindergarten, we teach manuscript writing focusing on pencil grip, letter formation, and spacing.

In first grade, we teach cursive writing letter by letter from the first day of school through December. After December, items written on the board and by the students are done entirely using script/cursive.

3rd - 5th Grade

BJU Press’s elementary English curriculum connects skills in writing, mechanics, listening, speaking, and viewing. Students study one part of speech at a time, mastering English conventions through spiral review and regular practice of each skill. Proofreading activities give students practice in analyzing sentences, identifying grammatical errors, and correcting errors within the context of writing.

ELA

BJU Press’s middle school writing and grammar curriculum provide students with a real-world focus for exercising language skills as they systematically review and practice grammar and mechanics and directly apply English conventions to writing. Activities give students practice in using the writing process to draft text in various genres. Students synthesize grammar, usage, research, writing, digital, speaking, and listening skills to become effective oral and written communicators.

BJU Press’s junior high literature helps students go beyond learning about literature to learning how to interact with literature. Students develop a deeper understanding of their fellow man as they examine texts from different cultures, diverse authors and genres, and a range of time periods. Students use text-focused close reading techniques through a before, during, and after reading approach which emphasizes comprehension and critical thinking. Students evaluate each selection, sharpening their discernment and shaping their worldview.

History

BJU curriculum seeks to look at every subject through the lens of God's Word. Heritage Studies offers a clear opportunity to see how God has had His hand on human events to establish His kingdom. Students can study the lives of historical figures and learn how they either failed or succeeded in following God's standards. Students are also given opportunities to evaluate concepts, such as cultural values, economic issues, and governmental systems in the light of Scripture.

Science

Much of modern scientific thought is influenced by an anti-God bias. We teach students to carefully analyze the theories they will encounter and to reject error in favor of God’s truth and scientific fact. Every science textbook points out the infinite wisdom and designing hand of God in His creation and its laws.

Stories of great scientists and their discoveries help students see the practical ways science can be applied. Students are encouraged to think about modern scientific issues, such as cancer, pollution, and energy, and to practice creative problem-solving skills. Middle school science develops students’ critical thinking and research skills as they grow in understanding a biblical worldview leading to a deeper knowledge of how God and Science are connected, increasing their ability to defend their faith.

Our Spanish curriculum is written by our teacher who includes the four main facets of language acquisition (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking) in the classroom. A multi-sensory approach is used to teach and build vocabulary, learn grammar rules, and practice listening and speaking. These language-rich activities help students also grow in their appreciation for culture and language.
